The Columbia Central Percussion Ensemble began it's inaugural year as a competitive indoor percussion group with the program "Hungarian Rhapsody" lead by instructors Jeremy Smith & Blake Lankford. For 2016 they achieved 1st place in their class and are the 2016 TN State Champions in the Scholastic Concert A class for the Southeastern Colo Guard Circuit.
Published originally as a piano solo by composer Franz Liszt in 1847, its immediate success inspired an orchestral version in 1851. Drawing on the influences from Hungarian folk music this piece is built on its unique gypsy scale and rhythmic spontaneity. Hungarian Rhapsody has become a staple in both popular culture and the concert stage and is sure to leave the crowd clapping along.
